Privacy Policy

The Short Version

Tonify ("we", "us", "our") is a Chrome extension developed by Musestar. This Privacy Policy describes exactly how the extension handles information when you use it, and what browser permissions it uses and why.

By installing or using Tonify, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the extension.

What We Collect

Tonify collects and stores exactly one thing, locally on your device:

• Your theme preference (dark or light) — stored in chrome.storage.local so the extension remembers your choice between sessions

That's it. This preference never leaves your browser. There are no analytics, no crash reporting pipelines, no telemetry, and no external servers involved at any point.

What We Never Collect

To be completely explicit about what Tonify does not do:

• We do not record, save, or transmit any audio content from your browser — audio is processed in memory and immediately discarded
• We do not collect your browsing history, the URLs you visit, or which pages you activate the extension on
• We do not collect any personally identifiable information — no name, email, IP address, device ID, or user account of any kind
• We do not send any data to Musestar servers or any third-party server — the extension makes no network requests
• We do not use analytics, crash reporting, or telemetry services of any kind
• We do not create or maintain user profiles
• We do not share, sell, or rent any data to any party

How Tonify Works & What Permissions It Uses

Tonify requests the following Chrome permissions. Here is exactly what each one is used for:

• tabCapture — captures the audio stream from your active browser tab so it can be routed through the Web Audio API for pitch processing. This is the core permission that makes pitch shifting possible. No audio is recorded or saved at any point.
• scripting — injects a small script into the active tab to control video and audio playback speed (the speed slider feature). The script only reads and sets the playbackRate property on media elements. It reads no other page content.
• activeTab — limits the above permissions to only the tab you are currently viewing when you click the extension. Tonify cannot access background tabs.
• storage — stores your theme preference (dark or light) locally via chrome.storage.local. Nothing else is stored.
• offscreen — creates a hidden offscreen document that runs the Web Audio processing pipeline (pitch shifting via a dual-head phase vocoder). This is required by Chrome's architecture for audio capture. The document is created on demand and closed when you stop capturing.

All audio processing happens in-memory inside your browser using the Web Audio API's ScriptProcessor node. The pitch-shifted audio is routed directly to your speakers. Nothing is written to disk or transmitted over any network connection.

Third-Party Services

Tonify the extension makes no network requests and communicates with no third-party services. There are no SDKs, tracking libraries, or external APIs bundled in the extension.

Tonify works alongside streaming platforms you already use (such as YouTube, Spotify Web Player, SoundCloud, and others) by capturing their audio output locally. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or partnered with any of these platforms. The extension does not log in to these services, read your account data, or interact with their APIs in any way.

Musestar's website (musestar.org) is a separate service from the extension itself. Standard web hosting may log your IP address as part of serving web pages — this is governed by our hosting provider and is unrelated to the extension's functionality.

Your Rights & Controls

Because Tonify stores only a single local preference (your theme choice) and sends nothing to any server, there is no personal data held by Musestar to access, correct, or delete. You are always in full control of everything the extension touches:

• Uninstall at any time — removing the extension from Chrome immediately deletes all locally stored data including your theme preference
• Clear extension storage — you can wipe Tonify's stored data at any time via Chrome's extension settings at chrome://extensions
• Revoke permissions — you can remove any of Tonify's browser permissions individually through Chrome's site settings without uninstalling the extension
• Stop audio capture instantly — clicking "Stop Capture" in the popup immediately closes the offscreen document and terminates the audio stream

Residents of the EEA, UK, or California may have additional rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, or CCPA. Given that we hold no personal data whatsoever, we believe full compliance is inherent. Contact us at hello@musestar.org with any questions.

Children's Privacy

Tonify is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through our services, please contact us and we will take steps to address it promptly.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will notify users through a notice in the extension or on our website. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

Continued use of Tonify after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
